Welcome

Walter's Wish is a Hispanic Mentoring and Advising Program for students in the St. Paul school system. St. Paul students from the Latino population come disproportionately from low-income families where parents likely didn't finish high school. Many of their parents did not grow up in Minnesota, speak little English and are not familiar with the way our educational system works.

This poses substantial barriers for Latino students to graduate from high school and seek post-secondary education. Currently out of 100 ninth grade high school students of color, only 5% of Hispanic students will get a bachelor's degree in Minnesota within 10 years.
THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM CONSIDERING THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION STATES THAT THE ONLY COLLEGE-AGE POPULATION EXPECTED TO GROW OVER THE NEXT TEN TO TWENTY YEARS IS THAT OF MINORITY STUDENTS!!

Typically many Latino students will have little chance of going to college without intervention of a caring and knowledgeable third party. We need more mentoring and tutoring programs for our Latino students.

"Walter's Wish" is a third party with the dream of making college possible for every Hispanic student we work with!
